Upright Headstones

Upright headstones have become the most popular option for marking a grave, as they are easily recognizable. These consist of two components; a base and a tablet with information about the deceased engraved upon it. The tablet is vertical on both sides, front and back.

These can be a single upright or a companion upright headstone. Usually, these are used for married couples or partners. Unlike our grass-level grave markers, upright headstones can be easily seen and read from some distance.

Custom vs. Traditional Upright Headstones

An Upright Headstone may be the most common headstone seen all over North America and Northern Europe. The tradition of placing an Upright Headstone to memorialize someone can be seen in many religious burial rituals, including in Muslim, Jewish, and Christian faiths, and is widely celebrated even today.

A standing memorial typically contains a comprehensive narrative of the deceased’s life. It usually has their complete name, date of birth and death, an inspirational message, a prayer, Scripture, or a favorite phrase carefully engraved on it. When creating something meaningful, allow yourself to reflect on the cherished memories of your loved one and their positive influence on this world, and it will help inspire your project.

We have the technology to craft nearly any image in stone or a beautifully colorful porcelain portrait inlay. The amount of detail we can pack into these significant headstone memorials is astounding.

Traditional Upright Headstones

Upright memorials have been a popular choice for many years, and they traditionally include a 12″ thick base. Generally, they measure between 2″-3′ tall, so when all is said and done, you can end up with a monument standing between 3-4 feet tall. The top of the upright headstone will likely be oval, as seen with many white marble military headstones, or with a serpentine top or “SERP top” for short.

An upright headstone is our recommendation for those looking to tell the story of a strong and prominent individual. Headstone heights and surface area are an ideal way to pay tribute to your loved one. Headstones are becoming more affordable, so you don’t have to worry about breaking the bank when honoring them.

Custom Upright Headstones

The only thing grander than a Traditional Upright Memorial is one with a completely custom shape and color. Both are unique to the loved one or loved ones lost and aid in helping to tell their story.

When thinking of choosing a custom headstone, it’s important to remember that it can take anywhere from 3-6 months to be ready. This usually starts with creating an initial design and then approving the proofs before installation. Another factor to consider is that the more unique and rare the stone or material, the more expensive it will be.

If you need more time and money to tell your loved one’s story, we highly recommend designing to your heart’s content. In most cases, any shape and size can be built.

Choosing the Right Material

Granite is the favored material if your family is starting to design a memorial. Across North America, this type of memorial is usually created with granite. Granite is a natural stone mined from select portions of the world, and it is long-lasting and rigid.

Sizes

Generally, upright headstones measure 3-4 feet in height when finished. These are placed on a base that is typically 6 inches to 1 foot more comprehensive than the memorial on either side. Thus, centering the upright in the middle. (2-5 inches on either side if you will not incorporate flower vases.)

Single Upright Headstones typically range between 1.5-3 feet wide. Depending on the design, companion Upright Headstones would likely exceed the 3 feet.
